Satan's Tactics

"...the whole world is under the sway of the evil one." 1 John 5:19

"Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness..." 2 Cor. 11:14-15

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world...." 1 John 4:1

Whether we realize it or not, Christians are engaged in a spiritual war! We do not fight against flesh and blood (other people or animals), we fight against cosmic powers, against spiritual forces, against, principalities, evil powers, which are at work in the invisible spiritual realms. Satan and his forces will attack believers using multifaceted weapons and tactics, devices, schemes and strategies! We need to be aware, to be alert, to be discerning and READY to resist! Thank God, that every true believer in Christ, saved by his blood, can successfully resist by the power of the Spirit and His Word! We are promised, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

One of the key elements in any contest is to understand the strategies and tactics of your opponent and to recognize the subtleties of the strategy or moves they may employ. A lot of money is spent in sports to study and analyse the tactics of the opposing team. In the spiritual battle of life, we need to develop some sophistication in recognizing, naming, and understanding the subtleties of common tactics of the Devil. We thank God that we are not ignorant of the schemes and tactics of the devil (Eph. 6:11).

Three Kinds of Temptations:

Body

Soul/Spirit

Lures:

food, sex, ads, comforts…

praise, power, pride, re-imagining God and His Word, books, movies, clothes...

pressure to conform

1 John 2:15-17

"lust of the flesh"

"lust of the eyes" pride of life, self-exaltation and aggrandizement, vainglory,

Genesis 3:6

"good for food"

"delight to the eyes" or "make one wise" self-gratification, pursuit of pleasure rather pursuit of God or good.

Ephesians 2:3

"desires of the flesh"

"desires... of the mind" "according to...the spirit...of disobedience", Passions, lusts, covetousness which is idolatry.

Resist with the Word of God

Rom.  12:1  "...present your bodies” to God…

Rom.  12:2  "do not be conformed to this world…." Rom. 12:3   Don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought…

And now we examine four common tactics of the devil.

I.              Deception – John 8:44

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

The devil deceives believers with many false and empty promises. Most of these relate to the lie that we will be happier and more fulfilled if we sin, or deny aspects of the truth or supress the truth. Many times he has used the old tale promise – no one will get to know about it! Whatever passing pleasures come with sin, they are in fact fleeting pleasures. Great and accumulated suffering eventually comes with almost all sinful activity in this life and if unrepented in eternity. Yet, despite this experience, human beings remain very gullible. Somehow, there is fleshly love for such empty promises and put all sorts of false hopes of them.

a)    The devil deceives by suggesting all sorts of complexities, especially in your thinking. “Did God actually say…?” (Gen. 3:1). And thus he seeks to confuse and conceal the fundamental Biblical truths. Our minds are very wily and love to indulge complexity as a way of avoiding the truth and making excuses. So we, conniving with the devil, entertain endless complications by asking “But what if this….and What about that….??!”  Along with the devil, we project all sorts of possible difficulties, exceptions, or potential sob stories, to avoid insisting on absolute truths that we or others behave well and live according to the truth. Do not try to bend the truth, for the lies of the devil will not simply bend you but destroy you.

b)    The devil also seeks to deceive with “wordsmithing.” “You shall not eat of any tree in the garden? (Gen. 3:1)   And thus the dismemberment and murder of a child through abortion becomes “reproductive freedom” or “Choice.” Sodomy is called “gay” (a word which used to mean “happy”).  Fornication is called “cohabitation.”  And the redefinition of marriage as it has been known for some 5000 years, is labeled “marriage freedom.” Our glowing Christian Faith and truth as well as ancient wisdom from the Scriptures is called “fanatical darkness” and “religious ignorance or blindness.” And thus, through exaggerations and outright false labelling, the devil deceives the world, and we too easily connive by calling evil good, or “no big deal,” what God calls sinful. The Word of God is the breath of God, and it is profitable for teaching, correction, reproof, training in righteousness so that we are mature and complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work. Read and study the Bible daily. Apply the truth you read to every situation of life. Live in obedience of the Scriptures.

c)     The devil also deceives through the sheer volume of information. “You willl not surely die…your eyes will be opened and you will be like God… (Gen. 3:4-5.) Information is not the same as truth, and data can be assembled very craftily to make deceitful points. Election polls are collected and presented in such a way to sway the masses to favour a particular side - all over the world! Further, certain facts and figures can be emphasized, in exclusion to other, imbalancing truths, exaggerations, blatant lies spoken as if they are true. Like the theory of evolution has been presented over the years as if it is the truth. And thus even information or data which is true in itself  becomes a form of deception. The news media, and other sources of information, sometimes exercise their greatest power in what they do not report. And this too is a way that the devil brings deceptions upon us. But if the book of the law, the Bible, does not depart from your mouth, and your heart, and you meditate on it day and night so that you are careful to do according to what is written in it, then you shall be prosperous and you will have good success (Joshua 1:8). You will be like a tree planted by the water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaves do not wither - whatever you do will prosper, as you meditate, day and night on the law of the Lord (Psalm 1).

We do well to carefully assess the many ways Satan seeks to deceive us. Do not believe everything you think or hear, or watch on the TV or on the internet. Artificial Intelligence images have become almost a reality of our day. But it is what it is - AI not reality. The so called virtual reality is no reality at all. Even life experiences must be considered in light of Scriptures - these experiences as real as they may appear are not infallible. It is only the Scriptures which cannot be broken. While we ought not to be cynical, we ought to be sober, and seek to verify what we see and hear and square it with God’s revealed truth. The devil is the liar from the beginning and thus he is the father of all lies. Do not listen to his lies. Do not participate or propagate his lies.

II.           Division – James 4:1-2.

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel.

The Lord in John 17:22 highlights by His prayer that a chief aspect of his work on the Cross is to overcome the divisions intensified by Satan. Some argue that the Greek root of the word “diabolical” (diabolein) means to cut, tear, or divide. Jesus prays and works to reunify what the devil divides.

a)    The devil’s work of division starts within each one of us (James 4:1-2a). As we experience many contrary drives, desires and ambitions, some noble, creative, and edifying, others base, sinful, and destructive. So often, we struggle within and feel torn apart, much as Paul describes in Romans chapter 7:  The good that I want to do, I do not do…, and when I try to do good, evil is at hand. This is the work of the devil, to divide us within. And as Paul lays out in Romans 8, the chief work of the Lord is to establish within us the unity of soul and body, in accordance with the unity of His truth in His true Church by His Spirit. Let us always seek to be in step with the Spirit in the bond of peace.

b)    And of course the devil’s attack against our inner unity, spills out into many divisions among God’s people externally (v.2). So many things help drive this schisms, and the devil surely taps into them all: anger, past hurts, resentments, bitterness, fears, misunderstandings, greed, pride, and arrogance. There is also the impatience that we so easily develop regarding those we love, and the flawed notion that somehow, other more perfect and desirable people should be sought. And thus many abandon their marriages, family, churches and communities, always in search of the elusive goal of finding better and more perfect people and situations. The grass is always greener the other side of the fence, isn’t it? The truth is that the grass will only be greener if you water it!

c)     Yes, the devil has a real field day into a division among God’s people: … your passions at war within you (leads to) you being at war within you (spilling over to others in) murder, fight and quarrel. The whole plethora of sinful appetites and commotion in division is where the devil thrives.  He waters divisions so that more sin is born, and multiplied. Paul describes it thus in Eph. 4: 30-31, And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

We do well to recognize this divisiveness in our midst and root it as soon by going to the offending party and prompting repentance. Whatever our struggles with others, we all share a common enemy who seeks to divide and destroy us.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Eph 6:12). Feuding Brothers reconcile when there is genuine humility leading to repentance. We must be willing, always to humble ourselves like our Lord who did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but He humbled himself to the point of a servant, being born in the flesh. He humbled himself to the point of death on the cross! This is our Saviour and Lord. Let us then be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Doing nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves (Phil. 2:2-3).

III.        Diversion – Heb. 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

To be diverted is to be turned away from what is our primary goal or task. And for all of us, the most critical focus is God, His Kingdom and our service to Him. Our path is toward heaven, along the path of faith and obedience to the truth. Love of God and love of neighbour.  And thus the devil does all that he can to divert, that is, turn us away from our one true goal.

a)    Absolving us in the passing pleasures of this world. Creation of wealth and prosperity is one thing that Satan has used to make the hearts of many grow thorns and thistles, so that they do not respond to the Word of God with certainty. So many claim that they are so busy that they have no time to pray, or go to the church, or seek other means of grace for their spiritual nourishment. They become absorbed in worldly things which pass, and ignore lasting reality which looms. While poverty has killed its thousands, prosperity has killed its tens of thousands. Watch out for the desires to be rich can plunge you into more troubles as read in 1 Timothy 6:9–10

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

b)    Afflicting us with anxieties, fears and hopelessness. By these, the devil causes us to focus on fears about transient and temporary, and thereby not to have a proper fear of the judgment which awaits us. Jesus says Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell (Matt 10:28). In other words, we should have a holy reverence and fear directed towards the Lord, and in this way, many of our other fears will be seen in better perspective, or will go away altogether. But in this matter of fear, the devil says just the opposite: we should fear 10,000 things that might afflict us on this passing earth, and not think at all of the one most significant thing that awaits us, our judgment. How much do you think about your own death? LORD, teach us to number our days so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Give us contentment O Lord!

c)     Attacking us with diseases, poverty, and despair: Like he attacked the old Job, so does he do even now. He uses the same catastrophes and physical infirmities to distract us from being fully employed in the service of our gracious God. Yet our confidence is that He can only do God’s bidding and accomplish the purposes of God. For God works out all things together for our good. We must learn to face these trials with unreserved faith in God. Like Job, we must depend on God without wavering even though the dear ones die or he incites us to abandon God. We must say like Job, that "Though He slay me, yet I will trust in HIM!" We should have this attitude of the Psalmist, "Whom have in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." (Ps. 73:25-26).

At the heart of all diversion is that the devil wants us to focus on lesser things to avoid focusing on God, and the greater things, such as moral decisions, and the overall direction of our life which God has given us direction about in his Word. Once again, we must learn to focus on what matters most, and decisively refuse to be diverted to lesser things.

IV.         Discouragement –  Heb. 12:12-13

Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.

As human beings, and certainly as Christians, we ought to have high aspirations. This is good. But as in all good things, Satan often seeks to chalice or poison them. For having high aspirations, it is also true that we sometimes lack the humility that recognizes that we must make a journey to that which is good, and best. Too easily then, Satan tempts us to impatience with our self or others leading to anger and bitterness. And, in our aspirations, expected in unreasonably quick time, there comes a lack of charity toward our self or others. Some grow discouraged with themselves or others and give up on the pursuit of holiness. Others give up on the church because of the imperfections found there.

a)     The devil also discourages us, because aspirations are generally open-ended. The fact is, there is always room for improvement, and we can always do more. But here the devil enters, for, when we can always do more, it is also possible to think we’ve never done enough. And thus the devil discourages us, sowing thoughts of unreasonable demands within us as to what we can or should do day by day.

b)    The devil also discourages us through simple things like fatigue, the personal failings that we all experience, setbacks, and other obstacles that are common to our human condition, and common to living in a fallen world with limited resources. While we must be cautious not to overextend our capacity, yet we must not give in slothfulness or laziness tendencies – we must attempt great things for God. We must be fervent in zeal.

Strategies

How to resist

Temptation

Know your vulnerable areas

Lies & half-truths

Know Truth well enough to discern error

Deception

Be alert to Satan’s schemes

Intimidation

Stand firm in Christ

Fear

Count on God’s promises

Theft

Protect your inheritance

Murder

Hide in Jesus

In all these ways to devil seeks to discourage us, to make us want, at some level, to give up. Yet the Lord constantly warns us against despair or giving up. It is only the one who endures to the end who shall conquer and be given the crown of life.

Only a properly developed sense of humility can help to save us from these discouraging works of Satan. Humility, which is reverence for the truth from God about ourselves, teaches us that we grow and develop slowly and in stages, and that we do in fact have setbacks, and live in a world that is hard, and far from perfect. Recognizing these things, and being humble, helps us to lean more on the Lord, and trust in his providential help, which grows in us incrementally. We must never forget that the one who endures to the end will be saved.

Beginning is good but it must come to the completion.

A Godly Response to Coronavirus Pandemic - Part 3

What should we be thinking about at this time of global pandemic? Should you spend all the time checking the new figures or the high rate of infection? How do you invest your mind? What do you think and meditate on? GOD!

We should think, and meditate on God – his sovereignty, his goodness and his grace, his love and mercy, his holiness and justice …all his attributes, communicable and incommunicable. Let us seek the Lord today. Let us know that God reigns and superintends over all the affairs of his creatures.
Anyone who thought that God after creation took leave of his creation is mistaken. He is at work and, believe it or not, God has brought the Covid_19 upon the world! Listen to what God says through his prophet, Isaiah:
I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create calamity, I am the LORD, who does all these things. (Isa 45:5-7)

Here is the last consideration on a godly response to this global pandemic:

REMEMBER THAT GOD IS OUR PORTION FOREVER

The Psalmist in Psalm 73:26 simply states, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
The verse that we have been meditating on, is both grim (for it actually envisages death, when Asaph says, “My flesh and my heart may fail…”) and also full of life and hope. The conviction arrived at is that even in that last and bitterest extremity ‘God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.’ Therefore God remains and should remain the best and the greatest treasure that death cannot rob us of, and even in the very experience of dying, God supports his own and is more than ever their best possession. A fullness of faith and conviction speaks in these utterances that scarcely ever mounts to higher levels in the whole of the Old Testament.[1]
So what does it mean that God is my portion? Using the Principle of interpretation of Scripture called Analogy of Scripture (or simply put, scripture interprets scripture), we look at other passages of Scripture that use this language:
David in Psalm 16:5 – The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.
Psalm 119: 57 – The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep your words.
Psalm 142:5 – I cry to you, O LORD; I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living."
Jeremiah, engulfed by trouble in Lamentation simply says in 3:24, "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him."
Portion could also be rendered inheritance – that which lawfully falls to one’s share at is used in Psalm 16:5 and Psalm 17:14. And so W.S. Plumer – whose commentary is regarded as the loftiest in Christendom, says of this verse, “A child of God though he suffer long and severely, fares well; for he has God for his portion. It is far otherwise with the wicked.”[2]
In this term, Asaph is saying that whatever the Lord has sent his way is His will, but he is comforted by the fact that the Lord will always be his. God will not forsake him, and therefore in all circumstances, especially of trouble, he looks to God and He waits upon God both to deliver him and to take him where He is. Hengstenberg commenting on this verse says, “It is clear as day that this passage contains the germ of the doctrine of the resurrection.”[3]
Spurgeon on the other hand commenting on it says,
“His God would not fail him, either as a protection or a joy. His heart would be kept up by divine love, and filled eternally with divine joy. After having been driven far out to sea, Asaph casts anchor in the old port. We shall do well to follow his example. There is nothing desirable save God: let us, then, desire only him. All other things must pass away; let our hearts abide in him, who alone abideth for ever.”[4]

1)      Pursue Godliness by making good use of the times and the means
God is our portion forever. His presence is our portion even in the valley of the shadow of death is enough. For God is not only my shield to defend and protect me from those enemies of my body and soul but He is also my portion to supply all my needs. His love, his grace, his mercy and his peace shall always be enough and sufficient and more than sufficient.
Because God is our portion, his word is our portion as well. This is what we sing in the song Amazing grace – The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures, He will my shield and portion be, as long as life endures. Therefore, let us read, and study the Scriptures, daily and regularly. Let us meditate on his Word day and night. Let us resolve, that since we are either locked in, or under compulsory quarantine, we shall spend much of our time in the Word of God, personally and with our families. If you need materials to use in instructing your children in the things of God, then contact us. We have many resources that can enrich your soul. Just call us on +728431067 or email Murungi@trinity.or.ke
His people, the church is our portion as well. The Lord God, in his sovereignty and wisdom, has used it to straighten our ecclessiology: The lockdown effectively demonstrates that church is not about buildings - it is about being united with Christ and his body (the church), not just when we assemble, but always, wherever we are! Therefore, let us deliberately seek to build close ties with our spiritual family – the church, after all we are members, one of another. We should call them and chat with them more regularly. Pastors need to be deliberate in providing spiritual nourishment to the church members so that even though for a while we part, this thought will soothe our hearts, that we shall soon be joined together either here on earth or in heaven, with the Lord. Make use of the WhatsApp (and other social media) to connect with the brethren. Yet we must not be so sucked into the social media as to neglect other vital disciplines.

The time he has given us to live is our portion. The present distress is a divinely instituted decree – it is our portion. We shall not take one and reject the other – we shall not receive good from the Lord and not evil. Now we are to learn to make good use of the providence he has given us. Now that you have to be at home, then be at home and use the time for the profit of your soul.
I know some men are complaining about the curfew, hindering them from going to the pub and catching up with friends. But I ask you, when did catching up with your drinking buddies become more important than your wife and children? Spend the time with children. Be the headmaster or the principal of your children's education.

You had thought or said that you do not pray so much because you lack time. Pray using the weekly Prayer List and the monthly Prayer Diary. Pray for your relatives who are unbelievers and neighbours as well. You had claimed that you lagged behind because of the lack of time read the Bible – now you have the time – read it.
Again you have your relatives – they are your portion. Call your parents and your sisters and brothers and give them God’s portion and calm them for most people are in panic. Seek to intentionally build closer ties with people that you were hindered by your busy schedule from being of ministry to them.

IN CONCLUSION
In every storm you would seek a tree to shelter; in every danger, you would seek a city of refuge to secure you; and in every difficulty you would be wise to look for a solution; in every darkness you would want to have a light to guide you; and in every peril, you need a shield to defend you; and in every distress, a cordial to strengthen you; and in every trouble, a staff to support you; in every sickness, you would seek a doctor to treat you – why would you not seek the Lord Jesus Christ while He may be found? Is he not the Great Physician to the sick, the Good Shepherd for the flock, the Bread of life to the hungry, the resurrection and the life to the dying? Why would you delay and postpone coming to the only hope for your soul? Turn to Christ and live!

YOUR DUTY (3)

Mark 12:13-17
And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk. And they came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone's opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?" But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, "Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it." And they brought one. And he said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They said to him, "Caesar's." Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they marveled at him.
3) YOU HAVE A DUTY TO GOD
God is the supreme, sovereign that all must obey, worship and serve. God does not depend on our service. He has existed for eternity without the universe. Therefore do not think that God depends on the counsel of men. No one can direct Him in His ways or purposes.
Being sovereign He has put a demand on all people, that they must serve and worship Him as God. This is because every human being bears His image, just as the denarii bore the image and inscription of Caesar. When God created man, He made them in His image. Being in His image means that they especially belong to Him and ought to show allegiance and commitment to Him.
“And to God the things that are God’s” – The coin bore the image of Caesar and thus it belonged to him. Giving him what was his was not wrong. However, some things do not belong to Caesar. Just as the coin bore the image of a man; all men bear the image of God.
Jesus is saying, “Give Caesar his money, because it bears his image. It is his! But, your devotion belongs to God, because you bear His image. You are His!”
Every human being in this world was created in “the image of God”, Gen. 1:26-27. Thus, He owns us and He has the right to demand that we yield ourselves up to His will for our lives. Even if you are not saved, the Lord owns you by right of creation. Therefore you ought to glorify Him as God. If you don’t glorify God as your Creator, then you will replace Him with His creation! And in this you will incur His wrath sooner or later. If you are saved, He owns you by right of creation and by right of redemption, 1 Cor. 6:19-20. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Just as Caesar has the right to demand what is his, God has the right to demand what belongs to Him. Every human has an obligation to give God their worship, their obedience, their praise, their love and their gratitude. We owe Him that for being Who He is and for all that He gives to us. (i.e. life, air, water, food, shelter, family, etc.) Christians are particularly called to live this life with utmost gratitude.
You bear the image of God! That image you bear is a symbol of divine ownership. God has the right to tell you what to believe and how to live – and His demand on you is whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to His glory. God has the right to demand your obedience and submission. He has the right to demand that you receive and believe His Son as your Savior!
According to Rom. 13:4, the state has the “power of the sword”. When we fail to obey the state, there will be consequences, such as imprisonment and death. When we fail to obey the Lord there are also consequences. There is Hell for the unbeliever and chastisement for the believer.
Jesus is telling those men, and us, that we have an obligation to honor the rule of the state, but we have a higher obligation to commit our lives to the Lord and obey Him and His Word. Yielding to the state is our earthly duty. Yielding to the Lord is our eternal duty!
(Ill. Are you truly saved today? Have you yielded your life and will to Jesus Christ? Have you bowed before Him and confessed Him as Lord and Savior and received Him into your life? Have you believed the Gospel?
Are you yielded to His authority? Or, do you do as you please, working Him in when you feel like it? Do you live as one “owned” by the Lord or do you serve as your own master?
If you are not saved, you need to come to Jesus and He will save you. If you are not surrendered, and many, if not most, are not, then you need to get before Him and yield to His will for your life.)
Conclusion: When they heard the Lord’s answer, “they marveled at Him”. Literally, they stood there with their chins on the chests. They came to trap Him, but He turned the tables on them and He trapped them. They could not argue with what He had said to them. They simply left just as they had left in the previous episode. They left without Christ, without God, without hope for their poor souls. Leaving and closing the door for Christ is so easy – many have done it and you have done it so many times. Will you leave without Christ again today? To marvel at His words is not faith. To leave without Christ in your heart is not faith. And you need faith to be saved.
I do not what you to simply leave today without Christ. I want you to examine your heart and see where you stand with the Lord today. Do you trust Jesus for salvation? If not, come to Him now! Have you yielded the totality of your life to the control and dominion of the Lord? If not, come to Him now! Are you truly giving to God the things that are God’s?

YOUR DUTY (2)

And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk. And they came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone's opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?" But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, "Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it." Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they marveled at him.
2)    YOU HAVE DUTY TO THE CIVIL AUTHORITY
Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not? This is the question they wanted an answer. This was a seemingly innocent question that was so tricky, because it was politically loaded.
First, it demanded a, ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. Clearly any other answer could appear to be evading the matter.
Secondly, whatever answer provided, Jesus was going to be between a rock and a hard place. For if Jesus answered, ‘Yes, by all means pay taxes to Caesar’ He would be setting himself against every ordinary Jew. For paying taxes was resented, because it was the mark of the Roman occupation, as well as an evidence of their slavery to Rome. The Zealots, had refused to pay and were regarded as the heroes. Jesus had a Zealot in his company (Simon the Zealot!)
But on the other hand, if the Lord said, ‘No, you must never pay a mite to the Caesar’ then they would charge him with treason to the Romans authorities be rid of him! The Pharisees and the Herodians had effectively planted the trap, or so they thought. "No way he can escape" so they thought. While they were in this state of glee, the Lord read through their hearts and minds – hypocrisy was written all over them!
How do you like that phrase, “But, He knowing …?” These men thought they would pull a fast one over on Jesus. They thought they could outwit Him and trap Him in His words. They never realized that He could see  through them as through a transparent glass, exactly what they were. He could see the very condition of their hearts. He knew they were nothing more than “hypocrites”. Did you know that He knows your heart as well? Jesus knows everything there is about you. He knows if you are saved. He knows if you are just playing church. He knows if you are just playing a part so others will think well of you. He knows where you truly stand with God! He knows you, Heb. 4:13.
He responded, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” Nothing is hidden from the Lord, even the currency in the pocket! This question and the demand for a coin was directed to the questioning party. The word the Lord used for ‘put to test’ could also be translated 'tempt' is ‘peirazo’ which means to try or ensnare or trap. This is the same thing that Satan had done earlier on with Jesus. They were Satan’s agent, for they were doing devil’s bidding! However, Jesus responded with Scriptures and confounded them just as He had confounded the devil.
One denarii was about a day’s wage for a common worker. Let’s assume it is about a thousand Kenya Shilling. The Lord then asked them, whose image and inscription does it bear? They quickly responded that it had the image of Caesar. Remember Caesar is the title and the man reigning as emperor at the time was Tiberius. One side of the coin had his portrait  with the words, Tiberius Caesar Augustus Son of the Divine Augustus and the reverse side had his inscription seated on a throne, wearing a crown of diadem and dressed as a high priest. This side was written, Pontif Maxim or Highest Priest.
He was claiming both political and religious authority. Here was a human government that was laying a claim on the Kingdom of God. Caesar wanted to be regarded as God! When it comes to the Christian and government, there are four basic attitudes:
a)      God alone is our authority – There have been people who would totally separate themselves from all worldly associations and go off to live apart from the world, from sinners and from human government. The monks in the ancient monastic systems come to mind here. These are like the proverbial ostrich that buried its head on the sand. They disregard the reality of the human government.
b)      The state alone is our authority – This is the view of secularism like the Herodians. In this view that state is the sole authority in a person’s life. This is the most dangerous of the four. Many civil and political entities think that only the government, with its constitution is supreme. How far from the truth! This is a deliberate attempt at suppressing the reality of God. Many governments support atheism.
c)       God and the state are both authorities, but the state is dominant – People who hold this view pay God lip service, but believe the word of the state has more authority than the Word of God. This is the view of most politicians, even 'Christian' politicians.
d)      God and state are both authorities, but God is supreme – This is the biblical view. This was the view articulated by Jesus in these verses. Those who hold this view obey the state as long the demands of the state do not violate the clear teachings of God. When God and the state are in opposition, God is the final authority. When the state stands in opposition to the Word of God, (i.e. When we are commanded to perform an immoral act; go against our conscience; stand against the clear Word of God, etc.) - we have a clear duty to oppose the state and obey the Lord, regardless of the personal costs. This is what Peter said to the Sanhedrin, "We shall obey God rather than men!" (Acts 4:18-20)
Is there anything we can do NOT to pay taxes? How can things work so that you don’t have to pay Value Added Tax, Pay As You Earn, Duty, etc.? This may so much interest you, because tax is in a sense an evil that you would want to avoid! But the passage before us gives the most clear answer that you ought not to be thinking in that way. The Lord said, “Yes, pay taxes!” It is in your best interest to pay tax because your Master and Saviour has said so.
Your allegiance is first of all to God and as long as you live. However, the Lord expect you to be subject, for His sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme or to governors as sent by Him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Honour everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the emperor (1Peter 2:13-17). Even if under the most draconian government and you are wondering if it is God’s will, then know for sure that all human institutions, whether emperor, governor, president, chief, captain, prefect, inter alia, all are sent by God. This passage clearly says that this is the will of God.
This is what the Lord has given as instruction for His people:
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honour to whom honour is owed. Rom 13:1-7
It is the duty of every citizen and especially of Christian to be law abiding. This is because
(1) all authorities are instituted by God. They exist by the will of God, they have His mandate and blessing. Therefore acts of rebellion against the state are to be regarded as rebellion against God who appointed them.
(2) all authorities are for your welfare. God has put authorities in place for two purposes – to punish evil and to reward the good. It is the high time that Christians regarded all authorities as God’s servant for good.
(3) be in subjection for the sake of your own conscience. How can your regenerated conscience allow you to take glee in wickedness and rebellion?

For this reasons, you are to pay taxes to the government, faithfully as one who is paying to God! Pay to all what is due – whether taxes, subjection, honour, revenue etc. Remember also that this is the way of funding the government operations. Do you want good roads, and healthcare, and police protection and order in the society? You have to pay taxes get these services. After all the government mints or produces money – give it back to them, you will not need it the heaven where you are going.
With this in mind, let every good citizen, especially Christians show their godliness by paying taxes and filing their annual returns ASAP. Thank God that for Kenyans the closing date is at the end of April! I was shocked by one of the assistant commissioners at Kenya Revenue Authority two years ago when he said that pastors and churches are the most notorious when it comes to tax evasion in Kenya. Pastors for one don't even pay PAYE! We have to be careful not to preach water and drink wine! You have to remit all your taxes promptily in view of what your Master, the Lord has said. After all He paid taxes when he got the denarii from the mouth of the fish, so you have no excuse. If Christ is your Lord Lord, then you will follow Him duly, closely and faster this year by paying your taxes, won't you?
