If God had not given the Israelites the Law at that time in their national history, after liberating them from Egyptian bondage, they could have remained under Egyptian legal bondage, and purported (though sincerely) to serve Yahweh as if an idol as it happened shortly before Moses descended from Sinai (they made a golden calf, indulged in orgies, supposing that it was all in the service of God). The Law was also a gtacious way of liberating them! The Law was intended for the blessing of men & women! Its prescriptions are important, but this importance lies in the good it brings to real people ... as they obey God, glorify Him and are fully satisfied in Him, for all eternity.
